Everything Nice: Getting into the Fall Spirit in the Sunset

By Su Yardimci

Spice Up Your Coffee Order at Andytown

3655 Lawton St., 3629 Taraval St.

Andytown Coffee Roasters has built its identity around making the everyday feel special, and no drink captures that spirit more than the Snowy Plover. What started as an “offbeat creation” – espresso poured over sparkling water with a generous topping of whipped cream – has grown into a signature drink that people seek year-round. It is simple enough to order without thinking twice, but playful enough to remind you that coffee can be a small surprise in the middle of an ordinary day.

When autumn arrives, Andytown brings back a seasonal version that regulars wait for each year. The Pumpkin Spice Snowy Plover follows the same structure as the original, with espresso, brown sugar syrup and sparkling water, all topped with freshly whipped cream. The seasonal twist comes in the form of a pumpkin spice blend milled by Oaktown Spice, which adds a gentle nod to fall without overpowering the drink. It is the kind of variation that feels celebratory while still staying true to what makes the Snowy Plover unique.

For many in the Sunset, the return of the Pumpkin Spice Snowy Plover is a marker of the season. It is as much a signal of fall as shorter days or a crisp chill in the air. Stopping into Andytown for one is not just about a caffeine boost, but about taking part in a neighborhood rhythm that changes with the calendar. The drink is both familiar and new, carrying with it the comfort of tradition and the excitement of something that only comes once a year.

Enjoy a Meal by the Fireplace at Fiorella

1240 Ninth Ave.

Fiorella in the Sunset brings an easy sophistication to the avenues, serving handmade pastas and wood fired pizzas, with a wine list that is just as carefully chosen as the food. The restaurant is known for dishes that are rooted in Italian tradition but presented with a fresh touch, making it a place where you can just as easily share a few plates with friends as settle in for a full meal. The space has a lively energy, yet it never feels rushed, which makes it a natural fit for the pace of the neighborhood.

One of the details that sets Fiorella apart is its fireplace, which turns the dining room into one of the most inviting places to spend an evening in the Sunset. On foggy nights, the warmth of the fire transforms the restaurant into a retreat, drawing people in to linger over a glass of wine or finish a meal with conversation that stretches long after the plates are cleared. The fire adds a sense of comfort that pairs perfectly with the menu: simple, well-made food designed to be shared.

There is a balance to Fiorella that feels just right for the west side of the City. It manages to be stylish without being prentious and cozy without losing its lively atmosphere. Whether you are there for a casual dinner, a celebratory occasion or simply to escape the fog for a while, the restaurant offers the kind of setting that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the moment. With its combination of thoughtful cooking and the glow of the fireplace, Fiorella makes the Sunset feel like the perfect place to be on any evening of the year.

Connect with Community at the Sunset Autumn Moon Festival

Irving Street between 20th and 22nd Avenues

Oct. 4, noon-4 p.m.

The Sunset Autumn Moon Festival brings new energy to the avenues each fall, celebrating the mid-autumn holiday with a mix of tradition and community. Organized by the Sunset Chinese Cultural District, together with Self-Help for the Elderly, the event returns on Oct. 4 from noon to 4 p.m.. It blends cultural performances, food vendors and children’s activities with a health fair that provides resources and services for residents. The result is a festival that feels both celebratory and practical, honoring heritage while supporting the needs of the neighborhood.

Throughout the day, visitors can enjoy lion dances, live music and cultural demonstrations alongside rows of booths from community partners and small businesses. Families gather for activities, friends meet over shared plates and residents connect with resources designed to keep the district strong. This year’s addition of a vaccine clinic reflects the festival’s broader mission of care, weaving public health into a setting that is festive and welcoming.
