When Jenna McAnulty was raising her child in the City, she felt the African proverb, “it takes a village,” rang true to her journey. Through her experience as a preschool teacher and postpartum doula, she knew she had to create a community third-space to provide support and resources for parents.
On Sept. 26, the Sunset’s famous fog was nowhere to be seen as fifth-graders Ingrid Shettle and Benji Gomes De Mattos, representatives from the Jefferson Elementary School Student Council, cut the red ribbon officially opening the school’s two new playgrounds: one for kindergarten students on Irving Street and the “big kids’ playground” between 18th and 19th avenues.

The fog-swept corners of the outer avenues may not seem beholden to the passage of time. Owe it to the grey sheet overhead, or the mist in the air, or the Pacific Ocean crouched behind the dunes. At times our neighborhoods can feel timeless, like nothing has changed or will for a while.
In September, the California Legislature concluded this year’s legislative session, passing hundreds of bills on housing, health care, energy affordability and much more.

If the Great Hauntway celebration is truly inclusive to everyone, then it should be fully ADA compliant so disabled children and adults may also attend. This follows the same pattern of deceit used to establish this so-called “park” by widely spreading misinformation. The park’s events are not open to everyone if disability access is inadequate.
Ultimately, Joel Engardio’s speech is completely opposite of the recall’s true results because it falsely presents a narrative of his success, of progress, and of democratic triumph, while the recall actually signifies his voter rejection of his leadership and policies.

On Sept. 16, District 4 voters in the Sunset District decided they wanted to change who represents them at City Hall. With about a year left in his term, Supervisor Joel Engardio was recalled in a citizens’ revolt primarily over his support of the closure of the Upper Great Highway to vehicle traffic and the creation of the new Sunset Dunes park on the site.
I want to sincerely thank Supervisor Joel Engardio for his correct and courageous decision in supporting the transformation of the Great Highway. Even in the face of opposition and political risk, he stood by what he knew was right for safety, livability and the long-term future of San Francisco.

We look forward to working with Mayor Daniel Lurie and the Board to assure that new zoning will be equitable and effective. We urge a careful reconsideration of the “Family Zoning Plan.”
