BAY BEATS CONCERT AT THE BANDSHELL

COLE VALLEY NIGHTS

“Tutorial: A.I. Helps You Translate in Cantonese.” For over 50 years, Curry Senior Center has been dedicated to helping low income and homeless seniors in San Francisco through a holistic care approach. Their mission is promoting wellness, dignity and independence for seniors. This event is part of SF Tech Week. Thursday, May 14, 2-3 p.m.

“Workshop: Chinese Calligraphy with JoJo Liu.” Local artist Jojo Liu demonstrates the art of traditional Chinese calligraphy. Liu will be teaching you how to hold a brush, write basic strokes and write standing. Liu is a San Francisco based art instructor at Pacific Art League. Space limited. “Presentation: Multiply Your Houseplants: Success with Your Indoor Garden.” Learn about common house plants and how to care for them and propagate them for many years of leafy green joy. Presenter: Kimberly Swan spent decades experimenting in her small fog-challenged San Francisco backyard, joining UC Master Gardeners in 2022. Interests include soils, succulents, vegetables and perennials, and garden design, studying for several years with the Landscape Architecture program at University of California, Berkeley. Kimberly helps friends, family and community members transform their spaces into gardens that work for them — she led an effort to turn an elementary school in the Haight Ashbury from a barren paved lot into a multi-level thriving garden for play and curriculum. “Performance: Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco.” The Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco celebrates its 100th birthday with a program of favorite songs chosen from our many joyous years of singing. There will be songs of solidarity, of labor, of humor, of love, of protest, and of peace, sung in Yiddish, Russian, Ladino, English and even a little Turkish. FREE KIDS’ GAME EVENT

On Sunday, May 3, the San Francisco Police Activities League is set to host its free, annual kids’ game event at the historic Kezar Stadium (755 Stanyan St.) More than 850 kids are expected to participate in 50 and 100 meter races. For more information, visit sfpal.org.

The 4 Star Theater will be playing free family-friendly movies on weekend mornings in 2026. The films selected will cover a wide range from family classics to newer hits straight from theaters. FREE WALKING GROUPS FOR SENIORS

Join the friendly San Francisco 55+ Neighborhood Walks. These free walks are leisurely, not vigorous and accommodating for seniors with various walking abilities. To sign up, go to meetup.com/sf-55-neighborhood-walking-groups. You can see who else is walking. You are also welcome if you just show up in person. The walks meet weekly, except when it rains and sometimes on holidays – check the Meetup link for the latest updates. The walks vary from one hour to two hours, and you can leave at any time.

• Tuesday walks start at noon at Angelina’s Cafe, 6000 California St., at 22nd Avenue in the Richmond District and goes to Lands End and back.

• Friday walks start at 10 a.m. in front of the Forest Hill Club House at 391 Magellan St. and tours that beautiful neighborhood.

• Sunday walks start at 1 p.m. at Java Beach by the Zoo at 2650 Sloat Blvd. in the Outer Sunset and goes along Sunset Dunes from Sloat Boulevard to Judah Street and back. Dogs are allowed at the Ocean Beach walk.

• Golden Gate Park Walk for 55+ Seniors: We meet every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Pool of Enchantment next to the front of the de Young Museum. The route varies each week. Come get fine exercise and meet friendly people. If you have questions, write to freeseniorwalk@gmail.com. Every walk is located where there is a public bathroom either at the starting place or on the route.

GREAT BLUE HERONS ARRIVE BACK AT BLUE HERON LAKE

The island opposite the Blue Heron Lake Boathouse has four nests occupied by great blue herons. San Francisco Nature Education (SFNE) expects chicks to hatch any day. Meanwhile at the island near the waterfall, chicks have already hatched. Volunteers with high-powered spotting scopes will show the chicks at the Boathouse nests to the public. This is a FREE program on Saturdays: May 9, 16 and 30. The public can just show up – no advance registration required. Donations welcome. SFNE will also sponsor field trips around the lake and Strawberry Island on each of the Heron Watch Saturdays from 10 a.m.-noon. Fees must be paid online before the field trip. Separate trips are provided with experienced leaders for adults/teenagers and families with children 5-12. Registration closes at midnight on the Thursday before the Saturday field trip. Binoculars loaned to those that need them – free with the price of registration. SFNE is a 501c3 non profit corporation that teaches about wild birds in our parks since 2000. OBITUARY

Thomas Won, 71. Dec. 9, 1954-April 9, 2026. Known to friends and family as Tom, he passed away peacefully at UCSF Hospital after a six week struggle with pneumonia. Tom is survived by his mother, Elaine and two sisters, Til and Delores Won. We will miss him every day. A private family service will be held at a later date.

SUNSET MERCANTILE’S EMPORIUM

Sunset Mercantile’s first brick-and-mortar location is an incubating platform for local merchants and makers. Located in the heart of the Inner Sunset, Sunset Mercantile’s Emporium is an extension of its popular outdoor events. It serves as a platform for small vendors and makers to showcase and sell their unique, often handmade, products. You can find an array of items, from an in-store plant shop, to handmade bags, vintage fashion and grab-and-go artisanal snacks. The store also hosts workshops and seasonal events for the community such as the Inner Sunset Art Walk, Holiday Light Stroll and Noise Pop’s Summer of Music. TOPOGATO CELEBRATES ONE-YEAR STOREFRONT ANNIVERSARY

Topogato is celebrating one year at its Richmond District storefront, located at 5203 Geary Blvd. Founded as a small-batch chocolatier in 2020, the shop opened its first brick-and-mortar location in May 2025, offering handcrafted confections and treats. The San Francisco Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is recruiting volunteers to visit and provide support to seniors and persons with disabilities living in long-term care facilities. We will host the required 36-hour certification program each Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, from noon to 4 p.m., through April 14. Our office is located at 6221 Geary Blvd., third floor. VOLUNTEER WITH THE RICHMOND SENIOR CENTER

There are many ways to volunteer with seniors in the Richmond. Regular volunteer work can include: serving as a senior companion supporter, either by chatting with an isolated senior over the phone or by taking a short walk. Friendly callers can take maybe 15 minutes each time, and a short walk can be 30 minutes, depending on the preferences of our seniors. On June 6, they will host a “One Hard Thing” event. From 9:30 a.m. to noon, staff and volunteers to help with small tasks in seniors’ homes – things can be like changing light bulbs, organizing household items or gardening.
